Three U.S. states moved to deploy hundreds of members of their National Guard to the nation's capital as part of the Trump administration's effort to overhaul policing in Washington through a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness.

National Guard troops scaled up their presence in D.C. Thursday, with several stationed around the National Mall, at Union Station, on the subway, and other places.

After law enforcement set up a vehicle checkpoint along the busy 14th Street Northwest corridor, hecklers shouted, “Go home, fascists” and “Get off our streets.”

The president said he was declaring a public safety emergency and his administration would be removing homeless encampments.
