Talks have been ongoing since Newcastle saw another target, Joao Pedro, join Chelsea, and further meetings were held in Austria where Eddie Howe's squad have arrived for pre-season.

The 23-year-old, who came close to moving to St James' Park in 2022 before instead signing for Paris Saint-Germain, is on Newcastle's striker transfer shortlist following an impressive season at the Bundesliga club. Ekitike scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances last campaign.

The Telegraph say that Newcastle United are now looking to get a deal done to sign Hugo Ekitike, so that he can play alongside Alexander Isak and play as the lone striker in matches where Isak may be rested or unavailable.
