Utah Sen. Mike Lee earned rebuke from across the aisle after his controversial posts on the Minnesota shooting.

The Republican senator from Utah suggested in social media posts that the killings were the work of “Marxists,” and mocked Minnesota’s Democratic governor. He later issued a more sober condemnation of the violence.

Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) pulled Lee out of a Senate Republican-only meeting on Monday night to talk to him about how “cruel” and “hurtful” his comments were. Beyond the horror of the situation, Smith was also friends with Hortman.
