Newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff was stunned on her return to action, losing to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-3 at the Berlin Open

Gauff won her first Roland Garros title by playing the conditions and the occasion with more evenness than Sabalenka.

Sabalenka has been heavily criticised for attributing the result to her mistakes rather than Gauff's performance, describing it as the worst final she had played.
