In Iran’s capital city, the streets are empty, businesses closed, communications patchy at best. Panicked masses spend restless nights on the floors of metro stations as strikes boom overhead.

Thousands of people were fleeing Tehran on Wednesday after Israeli warplanes bombed the city overnight, and a source said U.S. President Donald Trump was considering options that include joining Israel in attacking Iranian nuclear sites.

Iran has not been publishing regular death tolls during the conflict, its last update, issued Monday, put the death toll at 224 people killed and 1,277 others wounded. Iran has retaliated against Israel’s airstrike campaign by launching some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel.
