Texas state Rep. Ann Johnson, one of the Democrats who fled the state for Illinois, told CNN’s Pamela Brown that she viewed the quorum break as a “last tool” available to her and her colleagues to protest the Republican-backed redistricting effort.

Flanked by Democratic lawmakers from Texas, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state should abandon its commitment to nonpartisan districts and instead let Democrats redraw maps to maximize their political power. The Democratic governor said Monday that the state should scrap the Independent Redistricting Commission enacted by voters in 2014.
