US President Trump has federalised the police force in Washington DC following reports of a crime wave, but the move has been slammed as 'authoritarian'

Trump says he is taking also control of the city's police force as he pledges to crack down on crime and homelessness.

From upholding civil rights rulings to quelling civil disturbances and even delivering mail, other presidents have sent out National Guard units.
