Hurricane Erick made landfall in Oaxaca as a Category 3 storm on Thursday, the first time a major hurricane has hit Mexico in June.

Powerful Hurricane Erick made landfall in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca early Thursday, the National Hurricane Centre in Miami said.

Hurricane Erick strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane on Wednesday afternoon as it churns in the Pacific Ocean near coastal southern Mexico, forecasters said.
