Victoria Mboko earned the biggest win of her young career with a dominant win over Coco Gauff of the United States to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals in Montreal. The 18-year-old from Toronto is having a breakthrough season after starting the year ranked outside the top 300.

Mboko will return to her underdog role in Wednesday’s semifinal against No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. The 2022 Wimbledon champion was up 6-1, 2-1 in her quarterfinal against Marta Kostyuk before the Ukrainian retired because of a wrist injury.

Two days after ousting top seed Coco Gauff in 62 minutes, there was no letdown for Victoria Mboko — even if she needed to dig a little deeper to keep her dream run alive.
